Your eyes are telling you that the objects in these photos are exactly what they appear to be, but your eyes are mistaken. (Don’t worry, our eyes were too.) You aren’t looking at pieces of sheer, satiny white fabric draped across branches, books, and playing cards. Nor are you looking at a ripe pear or a stack of dishes. You’re looking at awesome wooden sculptures.

These astonishing pieces are the work of Arizona-based artist Tom Eckert:

Working primarily with basswood, linden and limewood that is then coated with fine layers of lacquer paint, the artist can create realistic wrinkles in fabric or reflections that are almost impossible to discern from the real thing.

Eckert says of his work: “Forms carved to suggest cloth recur in many of my pieces. By tradition, cloth has been widely used to conceal and shroud objects in practices ranging from advertising to church rituals. Covered forms are often more evocative – with a sense of mystery absent from the uncovered object by itself. I remember in church one Lent, as a child, being mystified while gazing at the statues shrouded with purple cloth.”

You get home from a long day at work and turn on the TV. It’s been a long week, so you think to yourself- maybe i’ll take the family to a movie on Saturday. Maybe we’ll even go on a vacation soon! We could visit museums and go to plays and see all sorts of fun attractions.

When you turned the TV on, nothing happened. There are no actors to entertain you.
When you went to the movie theater, nothing was showing. There were no advertisements to tell you that anything was showing, so you went to the theater to find out. Nothing playing. There is no one to film and create movies for you. Well at least your vacation will be fun, right? Not like there will be any plays to see and there won’t be anything in the art museums.
Well at least you have the shack you are living in that you made out of cardboard and sheets.

Not like you could find an architect to build you a house with all the money you’re making as an engineer.

@NBCNews If these majors are so useless, then who designed the graphic used to announce this on your show?

Also without fine arts majors, we have no fine arts EDUCATORS, meaning that all the things we love- MUSIC, DRAMA, ART- would die out because we have no one else to pass it on. Art defines a a culture and a civilization and shows how humanity changes over time more than any other historical record could.

Not to mention the fact that doctors, scientists, engineers, bankers, and administrators are jobs necessary to maintain the structure of the life that we live, but… without the arts, what are we living for? As humans we exist to find ourselves, we exist and we create. Self-expression is an important part of life. The arts allow us to keep passion and humanity in our lives. Without the arts, we become nothing more than computers, living solely for necessity and functionality, and without expression, interpretation, or feeling.

Art helps us to understand ourselves and the way our minds work. There is the psychology of color and shape, the way humans respond to different images and react to sounds and stories. Literature is a form of art, too, I might add. Who do you think wrote all those plays the drama majors are studying? The arts keep us human because they force us to feel in order to create. They take away the monotony of an ordinary day and turn it into something completely extraordinary and hopeful, something unique and special that helps define us as a society and a person. And the arts make us feel like we are not alone. We feel emotion from a painting, a song, a play, a design, because the creator intended that we feel emotion when we viewed or heard it. We connect empathetically with other people through art, and it doesn’t take a common understanding of language, background, or culture to share an idea among thousands, millions, billions of people.

And, for people who do understand a common language (or speak other languages or have a translator, I suppose) art can connect people across the world. I’ve met several people through sharing my art on the internet and exchanged great advice and experiences that I never would have shared otherwise.

Art saves people’s lives every day. As Neil Gaiman said, when life gets tough you make good art. Whatever happens to you, no matter what it is or how hard it gets, turn it into something good. Release your emotions through song, dance, writing, painting, drawing, film-making, editing, whatever you’re called to do and however you’re called to express it, do it, because it will make things better. I should know- without my art I don’t think I would be here.

And you know what? Without these majors, none of this happens. Without these majors, everything that I just said slowly dies, and it may last one generation, or two generations, but it won’t last forever, and the last artist will fade from the world and we will be a society made of nothing but dust.

So look me in the eye and tell me these majors are useless.

I dare you.

There are thousands of scenic canyons in this region but most are relatively wide; in contrast, slot canyons have vertical walls and may be hundreds of feet deep but only a few feet wide.

The general rock is sandstone, in various shades of red and orange; it is sunlight, shining down and reflecting along the canyon walls that gives the canyons their special beauty; the shadows and colors change constantly as the sun moves overhead.

Rare Nacreous Clouds

Also called polar stratospheric clouds or mother of pearl clouds, nacreous clouds are mostly visible within two hours after sunset or before dawn. They blaze unbelievably bright with vivid, iridescent colors. These clouds are rare and occur in the polar stratosphere at altitudes of 15,000–25,000 meters. They are so bright because at those heights, they are still sunlit.

Although incredibly beautiful, they have a negative impact on our atmosphere. They create ozone holes by supporting chemical reactions that produce active chlorine which catalyzes ozone destruction.
